McKinsey's interview is considered one of the toughest in business. It combines a candidate-led case interview (you drive the analysis) with a Personal Experience Interview (PEI) that goes deeper than typical behavioral questions.
How McKinsey Interviews Work
Process: Resume screen → PST or Solve assessment (online game/test) → first round (2 interviews: case + PEI each) → final round (2-3 interviews: case + PEI each, with partners).
Each interview is ~40 minutes: 10-15 minutes PEI + 25-30 minutes case. Both happen in the same session.
The Case Interview
McKinsey cases are candidate-led - you're expected to structure the problem, decide what to analyze, and drive the conversation. The interviewer provides data when you ask for it.
Common case types: - Profitability: "Our client's profits have declined 20% over two years. Why?" - Market entry: "A European automaker is considering entering the Indian market. Should they?" - Growth strategy: "A hospital chain wants to double revenue in 5 years. How?" - Operations: "A logistics company's delivery times have increased 30%. What's happening?" - Pricing: "A SaaS company is launching a new product. How should they price it?"
What McKinsey evaluates: - Problem structuring: Can you break an ambiguous problem into logical components? - Analytical rigor: Can you do mental math, interpret data, and draw insights? - Business judgment: Do your recommendations make sense in the real world? - Communication: Are you clear, concise, and confident? - Synthesis: Can you pull it together into a coherent recommendation?
The recommendation: Every case ends with "what would you recommend to the CEO?" Deliver it crisply: recommendation → 3 supporting reasons → key risk → suggested next step.
The Personal Experience Interview (PEI)
The PEI is McKinsey's behavioral interview - but more intense. They pick ONE story and go extremely deep for 10-15 minutes. Not 5 stories with surface answers - one story dissected completely.
Three PEI dimensions (you'll face one per interview):
Leadership: "Tell me about a time you led a group of people toward a goal." - They want: a real leadership challenge, not just managing tasks. Conflict, ambiguity, resistance - and how you navigated it.
Personal impact / influence: "Tell me about a time you persuaded someone to change their mind." - They want: influence without authority. How did you convince someone through logic, empathy, or evidence?
Entrepreneurial drive: "Tell me about a time you built or created something from scratch." - They want: initiative, resourcefulness, and results. Not just a good idea - execution.
PEI tips: - Prepare one strong story per dimension (3 total) - Each story should be 2-3 minutes initially, with 10 minutes of depth available - They will ask: "What exactly did YOU do?" "How did that person respond?" "What would you do differently?" "What was the specific outcome?" - Don't exaggerate. McKinsey interviewers are trained to detect inflation.
What McKinsey Really Looks For
Structured problem-solving: You impose order on chaos. You don't jump to solutions - you build a framework, test hypotheses, and converge on an answer.
Client readiness: Could you sit in front of a Fortune 500 CEO and be credible? Poise, clarity, and confidence matter from day one.
Intellectual horsepower: You can handle complex, ambiguous problems and make them simple.
Impact orientation: You don't just analyze - you drive results. Everything you do connects to a real-world outcome.
Common Mistakes
- Using cookie-cutter frameworks. McKinsey interviewers see through "I'll use the 4Cs" immediately. Build a custom structure for each case.
- Not being hypothesis-driven. Don't boil the ocean. Form a hypothesis early and test it with data.
- Weak PEI stories. Generic stories about "teamwork" fail. Pick stories with real stakes, real conflict, and real outcomes.
- Poor mental math. Practice. You'll need to calculate margins, growth rates, and break-even points in your head.
